In honor of Women’s History Month, at least 15 union members, from IAM District 70 in Wichita, Kan., volunteered to help build a home that is sponsored by Habitat for Humanity.

The IAM’s William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center recently conducted its week-long foundational skills class for officers and other representatives in the machinists union. Two full classrooms allowed new staff to meet and work with colleagues from around North America. 

During the class, members learned how to manage their time and make schedules to service the membership. Class participants also studied a math program to help with future contract negotiations. Many speakers came to the education center, such as the Communications Department, who informed the students of how information can be given to the membership. WASHINGTON, March 8, 2024 – Atlantic Aviation workers at the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport voted overwhelmingly to join the IAM Union. Approximately 33 workers who handle ground operations at the airport voted in the election held on Wednesday, March 6. 

The campaign, which commenced in 2023, primarily focused on addressing scheduling and hours worked issues. Through the collective efforts of the workers and the IAM Union, this victory marks a significant step forward for labor rights in the aviation industry.

“This decision reflects the dedication and determination of these experienced aviation workers to secure better working conditions and fair treatment,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “By joining the IAM, these workers have taken a bold step towards safeguarding their rights and ensuring a brighter future for themselves and their families. I want to thank District 141 for their leadership in this organizing victory.” 

“The solidarity displayed by the Atlantic Aviation workers throughout this campaign has been truly inspiring,” said IAM District 141 Organizing Director Frank Giannola. “Their commitment to each other and their stand on the principles of fairness and justice has resulted in this historic victory. We look forward to working together to negotiate a strong contract that addresses their concerns.”

IAM District 776 recently conducted a comprehensive presentation at Texas State Technical College (Harlingen, TX) as part of its union education and outreach program.

The aim of the presentation was to educate students about the importance of unions and provide them with an in-depth understanding of IAM and its role in representing workers’ rights and interests.

During the session, representatives from IAM District 776 and IAM Local 2916 spoke about the numerous benefits of union membership, including job security, improved wages, better working conditions, and access to healthcare and retirement benefits. The session was designed to help students make informed decisions about their careers and future employment prospects.

The Georgia State Council of Machinists recently held a meeting in Atlanta that brought together delegates from across the state to discuss pressing issues facing workers and their families. Over two days, attendees engaged in legislative and political discussions and heard from prominent speakers dedicated to advocating for labor rights in the Peach State.

Amanda Goodman Berry, a Delta Air Lines worker who is helping to organize workers into the IAM, celebrates Black History Month by discussing the activism of Rosa Parks. In 1955, Parks made history by refusing to give up her seat to a white person aboard a city bus in Montgomery, Ala., a defiant move that launched the Montgomery Bus Boycott and catapulted the Civil Rights Movement.

U.S. Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) was joined by labor leaders at the U.S. Capitol to oppose the Fiscal Commission Act, legislation that would create a shady “fiscal commission” with the power to make quick cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Amanda Goodman Berry, a Delta Air Lines worker who is helping to organize workers into the IAM, celebrates Black History Month by discussing the life of Thomas “T.O.” Oliver Jones, a union organizer who helped lead the iconic Memphis Sanitation Strike that was championed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in 1968. Jones’ unique story can serve as motivation for thousands of Delta workers who deserve union representation with a great contract.

The Washington State Council of Machinists recently met in Olympia, Wash., for a political and legislative conference, one of four scheduled this year. Political candidates from around the state spoke to IAM members about their labor agendas. Machinists also lobbied inside the state capitol and pushed for legislation expanding labor protection, union organizing and workers’ rights.
