This is the 2019/2020 schedule of classes offered by the Communications Department at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center at Placid Harbor, Maryland. The official call for each course will be mailed out four months prior to the scheduled class date to lodges by the Communications Department.
Each course’s Official Call will be mailed out four months prior to the scheduled class date and will also be available online at www.goiam.org in the Communications Department section under the Headquarters tab. Each call includes the description of the course, the requirements for enrollment and the deadline for submitting Registration Forms, which is approximately two months prior to the class date.

Newswriting for Communicators
February 09-14, 2020
The Newswriting for Communicators course will teach Local and District Communicators powerful writing skills to better improve the ability of the IAM to better present the ideas and
principles of trade unionism to our members and the public at large. The class will be an intense, week-long writing boot camp and will include writing shop flyers, press releases, letters to the editor, short news stories and feature news stories.

Basic Web Development Class
February 16-21, 2020
This basic-level class is for lodges just beginning new websites and focuses on designing and constructing web pages appropriate for lodge use. This class sets in motion the transition from FrontPage & Microsoft Expression Web to WordPress. The new class will focus on creating a website with the WordPress content management system. Please review the official circular when it is available for the special requirements for this class, all participants must meet these requirements.

Intermediate Web Development
April 19-24, 2020
This intermediate-level class is for local and district lodges that already have a website with WordPress. Learn the ins and outs of WordPress including content, plug-ins, templates, back-end management, hosting management and much more. Please review the official call when it is available for the special requirements for this class, all participants must meet these requirements.

This basic course is geared toward lodge Communicators who are not publishing newsletter or websites. This course is designed to upgrade their skills and take their lodge communications to the next level by providing instruction in writing, social media, marketing, photography, desktop publishing, on-camera presence, and legal issues.

Advanced Communicators Class
December 08-13, 2019
Offered by the IAM Communications Department, this advanced course is geared toward District and Local Lodge Communicators who have attended the Basic Communicator Class. This course is designed to expand on the basic communication aspects covered in the Basic Communicator class and upgrade their skills to take their lodge communications to the next level by providing detailed instruction in: writing, photography and video for social media, marketing, graphics and desktop publishing.

Advanced Web Development – Canceled
November 03-08, 2019
Offered by the 1AM Conununications Department, this advance-level class is for local and district lodges that already have a website and is currently maintained (not outdated). This course takes what was learned in the previous two classes and transitions web stewards into being able to edit live style sheets, and other coding language. Due to the requirements this course will be by invite only and determined by the instructors of the course.
