As we continue to assist Texas IAM members in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we are now moving to assist IAM members in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Florida.

Machinists Union families in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico were first to experience the wrath of Hurricane Irma. The island of St. Thomas is dealing with near total devastation, while millions are cleaning up and without power in Puerto Rico. Irma is expected to make landfall in Florida on Sunday.

True to their word, the Liberal Government in Canada, led my Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has eliminated anti-union legislation with the passing of Bill C-4.

Two old pieces of legislation, both created by the Harper Conservatives through private members bills from backbenchers, were a sore point with the IAM and other unions. Bill C-377 required labour organizations to make a series of public financial disclosures including all transactions of more than $5,000.00. Bill C-525 replaced the card-check system with a forced secret ballot vote for any decision to certify or decertify a union. The newly passed Bill C-4 repeals both pieces of legislation.

“I wish to thank the IAM for its efforts in trying to make changes for the working people of Canada,” said federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu. “We made a commitment to improve our relationship with organized labour by reversing this legislation and the proof is in our actions. We’re working on a decent work agenda to modernize Canada’s Labour Code.”

The Liberal government took another step in the right direction on Wednesday June 14, 2017 when it ratified the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 98. The convention reinforces the right to collective bargaining and protects all workers from anti-union discrimination, including being forced to give up union membership in order to get a job, or job termination for participating in union activities.

“This is a very significant step because successive Canadian governments since 1949 have refused to sign this agreement,” said IAM Canadian Chief of Staff Gord Falconer.

“By ratifying Convention 98, Canada is committing not just to respect collective bargaining rights, but to promote and uphold them abroad and at home,” explained Canadian Labour Congress President Hassan Yussuff. “By signing this convention, Canada is finally recognizing the crucial role that strong unions and collective bargaining rights play in reducing inequality and building stronger, fair and inclusive economies.”

IAM member and Army Veteran Scott Lacey believes most people have the desire to support our nation’s military, but don’t always know how. He made it his goal to give members of his local an avenue to do just that.

Lacey approached IAM Local 63 leadership with an idea to have T-shirts made with the proceeds going to Northwest Battle Buddies, a charitable foundation that provides U.S. combat veterans with professionally trained service dogs who help with PTSD at no charge. Following membership approval, the shirts were made and quickly became a hit, especially the “Remember Everyone Deployed” version.

“We had nearly 100 shirts sold in the first eight hours,” said Lacey. “It’s awesome to see people’s reaction to the shirts, everybody loves them. I see a lot of people wearing red on Fridays, and not just the shirts we sold. That tells me that they made a conscious decision to remember our military when they got dressed.”

Lacey, a Boeing employee, has also put together a packet to help veterans navigate the process of signing up for benefits through the Veteran Affairs Department.

“I became frustrated when I went to sign up at the V.A.,” said Lacey. “There was no real guide and you just had to figure things out on your own. So I wanted make it easier for others to get through the process, they have enough things to worry about without having to stress about signing up for the benefits they earned.”

That experience inspired Lacey to get more involved and that’s when he came up with the idea of having T-shirts printed by the local.

“The benefits are two-fold,” said Lacey. “We support veterans by raising money for a great cause, and we also raise awareness by all these people wearing the shirts around town.”

“Brother Scott’s work is a shining example of what it means to be a Fighting Machinist,” said IAM Western Territory General Vice President Gary Allen. “I’m moved by the work he is doing, and I am proud of Local 63’s service to veterans and the community.”
