The IAM Workers’ Memorial was completed in 2001. It was dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives while on the job. The bricks surrounding the Memorial bear the names of fallen members along with bricks donated from lodges and proud members of the IAMAW.

On or around April 28 each year, a ceremony is conducted at the memorial to remember those who lost their lives and rededicate ourselves to prevent on-the-job injury and death to workers.

The deadline to submit personalized bricks is Friday, March 1, 2024.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a heat hazard alert (English and Spanish) in response to record-breaking temperatures putting workers in danger.

The alert reminds employers of their obligation to protect workers against illness and injury from high temperatures in the workplace, whether inside or outdoors.

OSHA has also escalated its enforcement of heat protections in industries where workers are most vulnerable: construction and agriculture.

“Employers must protect workers by reducing and eliminating hazards that expose workers to heat illness or injury,” said Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Doug Parker. “State laws that attempt to limit workers’ access to basic heat-illness prevention measures send a dangerous message that employers are not responsible for providing employees with a safe work environment. In fact, that is simply not the case. Regardless of their job or where in the nation they work, workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace.”

The Department of Labor announced OSHA’s Heat Alert in a press release on Tuesday.

According to the release, OSHA has taken action to protect workers from excessive heat with existing rules by:

  1. Developing an enforcement initiative on heat-related hazards
  2. Launching of a National Emphasis Program on heat inspections
  3. Creating the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health’s Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Work Group to understand challenges and share best practices to protect workers
  4. Launching a Heat Illness Prevention campaign to educate employers and workers on the dangers of working in the heat.

For information on heat illness prevention, please go to OSHA’s website.

IAM Director of Safety and Health Michael Oathout wants workers to know that they have protections and should report violations of their health and safety rights to OSHA.

“Employers are obligated to provide safe work environments,” said Oathout. “We want to remind workers, especially those in high-risk industries, that working in extremely high temperatures can be deadly. We don’t want workers to be scared of taking care of themselves and protecting themselves.”

IAM CREST recently hosted a hazardous materials training class and simulation at the Winpisinger Center through a partnership with the International Chemical Workers Union Council and its 11 union constituency groups.

“Through our jobs, we all come in contact with hazardous materials in one form or another, whether or not you realize you’re being exposed,” said IAM Safety and Health Project Coordinator Shaun Trude. “So the big takeaway from this class is learning to use the resources, not knowing the answers to questions, but knowing how to find them for yourself when you return to your location.”

The training includes class sessions and a full simulation of a chemical spill where participants learn the proper way to put on a hazmat suit and enact containing a chemical spill.

Afterward, in class, they review the simulation video and review what was done right and where mistakes were made.

“We also get into the OSHA code of regulations and standards so they learn what their rights are in their workplaces when it comes to hazardous materials,” said Trude.

IAM Local 1725 member Frederick Butz worked on the American Airlines ramp and attended the training.

“I’m here to learn more about safety and bring it back to the membership,” said Butz. “I’m trying to get more safety knowledge under my belt since I became Safety Chair of the local, and it’s important to know about dangerous goods that could be transported or in the workplace.”

For questions on the program or to enroll in a future program, please contact Shaun Trude at strude@iamaw.org.
