More than 100 IAM members, family and friends gathered Monday to mourn and honor working people who have been killed, injured or sickened on the job this past year. The IAM Safety and Health Department hosted the annual Workers’ Memorial Ceremony at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, MD.

General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes spoke about the IAM’s commitment to preventing workplace tragedies that take the lives of loved ones each year.

“The greatest honor we can bestow upon these men and women, the greatest tribute to their memories, is to double our efforts to fight for safe workplaces to ensure that not one more Machinist is killed or injured due to a preventable circumstance,” said Cervantes. “Not one more family should suffer as the families of these Brothers and Sisters have suffered.”

Southern Territory General Vice President Mark Blondin, whose mother passed away this year, spoke about what it was like working at Boeing before the IAM/Boeing Health and Safety Institute.

“In 1989 the IAM negotiated landmark contract language due to hundreds of complaints and dozens of workers coming forward to talk about their unsafe workplace,” said Blondin. “My own mother was one of those workers.

“This union took the lead in demanding testing, training, legislation and protection for workers and compliance from companies. Adverse safety and health issues don’t only affect the workers, but the family as well. Whether you take home the toxins in your clothing or you become disabled and dying, your family suffers as well.”

Unions across the U.S. and Canada recognize April 28 as Workers’ Memorial Day.  It is a time to mourn the losses of our beloved coworkers, and recognize that there is much work to be done to ensure safe working conditions for all.

IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes spoke about the importance of not only honoring the ones we have lost, but continuing to fight for safer work environments for all members.

“Each year we gather here to remember those who we have lost,” said Cervantes. “But make no mistake, our efforts to honor these dedicated workers does not end when we lay a brick with their name on it. Every single day IAM representatives fight to be sure our workplaces are as safe as possible.”

IAM General Vice President Rickey Wallace delivered the ceremony’s closing comments.

“We have to protect our Brothers and Sisters who are on the frontline making some of the most dangerous products in the world,” said Wallace. “So on this day, we will pledge to fight for safe jobs, economic security, opportunity and a better life for all.”

Friends, family and fellow IAM brothers and sisters gathered to honor the five men and women who lost their life on the job last year: Barbara Jean Blackburn, IAM Local 2766; Timothy Underwood, IAM Local 1471; John Douglas Snoddy, IAM Local 1486; Brian Cupp, IAM Local 162; and Donald L. Gray, Jr., TCU-IAM Local 6034.

Special remembrance was given to retired Business Representative Rene Dinneweth, IAM Local 1191; Directing Business Representative Michael H. Hornby, IAM District 10; retired Directing Business Representative Thomas Lesch, IAM District 10; retiree James J. Jones, IAM Local 778; retired Grand Lodge Representative Donald “Don” Stella, IAM Local 314; Grand Lodge Representative Alfredo “Al” Granado, IAM Local 776A; Mickey Marinko, IAM Local 2783; retiree Edward “Gene” Sykes, IAM Local 2783; IAM Local 1635 President Beverly McMullan; retiree Terry Haskins, IAM Local 639; and long-time labor leader and friend of the Machinists Labor Attorney Edward R. Although decades of struggle by workers and their unions have resulted in significant improvements in working conditions, the toll of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths remains enormous.

Each year more than 56,000 workers die from job injuries and illnesses and another 6 million are injured. The unions of the AFL-CIO remember these workers on April 28, Workers Memorial Day.

On April 28, 2016, the IAM will remember those members who died on the job during a ceremony at William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center located in Hollywood, Maryland. The IAM Workers’ Memorial Lighthouse was dedicated during the 2001 Annual Safety and Health Conference and has a special place on the grounds at WWW’s Memorial Park. Names of fallen workers are immortalized in a brick barring their name and date of death around it’s base.

The AFL-CIO website (http://www.aflcio.org/Issues/Job-Safety/WorkersMemorialDay)  contains more information about Workers Memorial Day.  Such as, articles and order forms to purchase posters, clip art, stickers, WMD kit, and death on the job report (all information is available in both English & Spanish) The first Workers Memorial Day was observed in 1989. April 28 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the day of a similar remembrance in Canada.

Every year, people in hundreds of communities and at worksites recognize workers who have been killed or injured on the job. Trade unionists around the world now mark April 28 as an International Day of Mourning.
