On Tuesday, Salt Lake City’s KUTV CBS News local affiliate published an investigative news piece on Union Pacific’s Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) model and its impact on safety, including the derailment of several trains in western states. 

TCU Carmen National Representative Kevin Loftin was interviewed throughout the program, and highlighted the importance of having adequate manpower to properly inspect and maintain locomotives and cars coming through the yards, as well as the impossible time constraints being placed on our members. 

The program heavily cites the recent testimony of IAM District 19’s Andrew Sandberg, which was jointly written by TCU and included many of the hundreds of responses we received to the PSR Worker Safety Survey. 

One carman from Union Pacific responded: “Working with less employees makes my job unsafe. I feel like I’m being rushed. I was told if we didn’t do the same amount of work, they were going to lay off again. They said that part was up to us. They are still running cars we have bad ordered for unsafe reasons like brake issues, etc. They’re eliminating/violating rules that we would used to get in trouble for, or sent home. They’re saying it’s ok to do these things. It’s because we have less people and they want stuff done in just the same amount of time.”

The TCU supervisor and an unrelated employee got into a white SUV when the suspect opened fire at the SUV as it drove away.

The supervisor was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

“TCU is shocked to hear of the incident that happened today at the Sunnyside yard in New York,” said TCU President Bob Scardelletti. “We hope our member makes a speedy recovery…TCU National Representative Mike Miller visited our member in the hospital and offered whatever assistance he, or his family, may need during this trying time.”

The TCU Carmen division will end the voting process Nov 2nd and will await the TWU Carmen results ending November 9th.

The new agreement will give TCU members a 16.5% wage increase over the course of 6 years, with full back pay. This includes TCU retirees and the beneficiaries of members who have passed away during the moratorium.

“It was a two and a half year struggle, the ratification shows the strength of the membership, they really supported us so that they could get a good contract,” said TCU Vice-President Arthur Maratea. “I want to thank TCU National Representatives Mike Miller and Billy DeCarlo for their support and leadership in negotiating this agreement.”
